From a young age, Fiona Vanhout has been deeply driven by a passion for both video games and visual storytelling. What began as a love for digital art evolved into a dedicated pursuit of illustration, learning extensively through self-guided study using online resources. She later formalised her artistic foundation at the School of Art and Design of Tarragona (EADT), specialising in illustration.

Alongside her artistic development, Fiona explored programming and experimented with different game engines, allowing her to merge technical insight with creative expression. This cross-disciplinary approach enabled her to apply her illustration skills effectively within video game pipelines, working on a wide variety of projects. She is experienced in designing, visualising, and delivering compelling visuals for 2D environments, with a particular strength in revitalising outdated assets and reimagining visual identities from the ground up.

Fiona’s core focus lies in character and environment design and implementation, with additional experience in UI design and the creation of marketing materials. Her work is defined by adaptability, strong artistic identity, and a deep understanding of how visuals support gameplay, mood, and player engagement.

Experience and Education

2018-Present

Commission Work

Fiona has an extensive track record as a commissioned artist, providing illustration and concept design services for a wide range of clients, with a primary focus on character art. Thanks to her strong understanding of artistic fundamentals and experience working across diverse client needs, she has developed a high level of adaptability—allowing her to successfully work in multiple visual styles tailored to different niches.

2022-2024

School of Art and Design

Fiona completed a two-year course at the main art school of Tarragona, Spain. The programme provided a broad range of artistic experience, including the integration of traditional techniques into digital art and collaboration on projects across educational, promotional, and literary contexts.

2025

A Dark Forest

Fiona actively sought out engaging collaborative projects, which led her to join the open-source development team of A Dark Forest, an atmospheric incremental game made in Godot. She took the lead in redesigning the placeholder assets, coordinating visual direction and establishing a style that better reflected the game’s eerie tone.

2025-2026

Red Rain

Fiona was initially brought onto Red Rain as a portrait artist but was later promoted to Lead Art Director. Throughout the project, she collaborated with a diverse team of artists with varying styles and was responsible for maintaining visual cohesion across the game's production.

2025-2026

The Shattered

Fiona approached the creator of The Shattered to collaborate on a complete visual reimagining of the game. Scheduled for release in 2026, the updated version will feature extensively revised and enhanced content, along with an entirely new visual style.
